Background of the Study
Gender bias in education refers to the unequal treatment of students based on their gender, leading to disparities in learning experiences, opportunities, and outcomes. In nursing education, where the profession has traditionally been seen as a female-dominated field, male nursing students may face particular challenges, such as stereotypes, stigmatization, or bias from faculty and peers (Owoeye & Shobayo, 2023). Gender bias can have a significant impact on students' academic experiences, self-esteem, and professional development.
At Borno State College of Nursing, gender biases may influence the educational experiences of male and female nursing students in various ways. Male students might be discouraged from pursuing nursing due to societal perceptions of nursing as a "female profession." Female students, on the other hand, may encounter discriminatory practices or feel marginalized in clinical settings or leadership roles. Understanding the effects of gender bias on nursing students’ educational experiences can help improve the overall learning environment and promote gender equality in the profession.
Statement of the Problem
There is limited research on gender bias within nursing education in Nigeria, particularly at Borno State College of Nursing. While gender disparities are often discussed in the broader context of healthcare, their effects on nursing students' academic experiences and outcomes are not well understood. It is essential to investigate how gender bias affects both male and female nursing students and to identify strategies for minimizing these biases to create a more inclusive educational environment.
Objectives of the Study
1. To investigate the presence and nature of gender bias in nursing education at Borno State College of Nursing.
2. To assess the impact of gender bias on male and female nursing students' academic performance and professional development.
3. To explore strategies to reduce gender bias and promote equality in nursing education.
Research Questions
1. Is there gender bias in nursing education at Borno State College of Nursing?
2. How does gender bias affect male and female nursing students' academic performance and development?
3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce gender bias in nursing education at Borno State College of Nursing?
Research Hypotheses
1. Gender bias exists in nursing education at Borno State College of Nursing.
2. Gender bias negatively impacts male and female nursing students' academic performance and professional development.
3. The implementation of strategies aimed at reducing gender bias will improve the academic experiences and outcomes of nursing students.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on gender bias within nursing education at Borno State College of Nursing and will examine its effects on both male and female students. The study will not consider external factors such as societal perceptions of nursing or the role of family. Findings may not be generalizable to other institutions in Nigeria or other countries.
